Presidents Message
July 2009
The weather this year has thrown farm operations off a bit with the thunderstorms and unseasonably cool weather. Nonetheless, we need to stay prepared for when the temperatures will inevitably soar in the coming months. Madera Farm Bureau will offer a Heat Stress Training Seminar for your employees on July 28th. The seminar is complimentary and will be presented by State Fund Workman’s Compensation. Participants will receive a certificate of completion, which you can file in order to stay in compliance with OSHA. We are seeing inspectors showing up on ranches, so please take the proper precautions by RSVPing at the Farm Bureau office 674-8871 to Norma.

It looks like harvest will be later than expected this year, and we are experiencing challenges in the field due to the coastal weather. Sulfur applications have trouble activating in these conditions, not to mention the unpredictable rains lately. If you have experienced crop loss due to rain or possibly to hail storms, these numbers need to be reported to the County Agricultural Commissioner’s office as soon as possible so that we may be eligible for any disaster funding.
Lastly, I would like to take this opportunity to recognize the 2009 Senior Farmer, Albert Cosyns. It is a great honor to be chosen by one’s peers for such an award, and on behalf of the Board of Directors at Madera Farm Bureau, I congratulate Mr. Cosyns.
